A recent experience with the barrel nut system. I recently took two rifles to the range to get sight settings. I had not fired these rifles but had loaded A Lot of ammo for Nationals for the two (I know that’s the wrong order). I had set the headspace on one and someone else on the other. Both rifles had failures to fire due to excessive headspace. Not a disaster thanks to barrel nuts. I reset the headspace on both and all is well. No trip to a gunsmith or shipping to a gun gunsmith. I’m not a machinist but have watched enough to know even if I was, setting the headspace with a nut is much less time consuming than a trip or two in and out of a Lathe. Just food for thought as you consider future barrels and options. Savage may have devised an ugly system but it can be very practical.
