  • Which air rifle is legal and most recommended

Which air rifle would be best for silhouette air rifle. 22 or 177 which is more popular. I have pictured 3 air rifles thinking of purchasing rules are unclear to me are these all legal?

Any of the three could be an “open air rifle” and the two Walther target rifles “Target air Rifle”. The .177 is likely the most popular choice. I attached the rules so folks new to this class of Silhouette could look them over.

    3.3 Silhouette Air Rifle:
    (a) Target Air Rifle: Any unaltered factory target air rifle designed for U.S. and International 10 meter competition. (i.e., as produced or sold by Anschutz, Beeman, Crosman, Daisy, Feinwerkbau, RWS, Steyr and Walther). Use of scopes or iron sights, including diopter sights is allowed. Any older gun may be brought up to current fac- tory specifications using only factory catalogue barrel weights.
    (b) Sporter Air Rifle: Any unaltered factory sporter air rifle that is or was a catalogue item, readily available over the counter to the general public, weighing no more than 11 pounds, with a scope and mounts. Rifles utilizing pre-charged systems of any kind other than 12.0 gram disposable CO2 units are prohibited.
    (c) Open Air Rifle: Any air rifle weighing no more than 16 Ibs. with scope and mounts. Length of barrel and action measured from the rear of the metal action or air chamber to the end of the muzzle, including any extension, must not exceed 40”. Rifle may utilize any self-contained or externally-charged compressed air system, but such system must be completely self-contained at time of fir- ing. Hook buttplates are prohibited. All air rifles not meeting Rules 3.3(a) or 3.3(b) will be fired in the Open Air Rifle class.

I would add or should have already added, if you haven’t already done so, try and reach out specifically to a few of the top air rifle competitors. The 2023 season is underway and response to an open post could be slow.
I see air rifle in my future as well, I have read the rules and done a little research but will try and get specific guidance before I purchase. My normal approach is buying then learning I could have made a wiser choice. Probably one of a few reasons I keep outgrowing my gun safe storage space.

That Walther Anatomic is nice but at $4000 not necessary for this sport. Last year Dustin kicked all of our asses with an older Anschutz 2002 CA in a wood stock after he had a problem with his open air rifle
